List of media workers detained in Turkey (after 2000)
This list of media workers detained in Turkey contains people who are likely to be arrested or convicted in Turkey after 2000 in connection with their media activities.
- The organization Reporters Without Borders assumed in December 2016 that over 100 journalists were imprisoned in Turkey .
- The Turkish platform for independent journalism P24 (Turkish: Bağımsız Gazetecilik Platformu P24 ), of which Hasan Cemal is the founding president , wrote of 155 imprisoned journalists in March 2017.
- Stockholm Center for Freedom maintains a regularly updated list of the lawsuits brought against journalists. According to this, 74 journalists were convicted and 168 journalists were imprisoned in December 2018.
- Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu , on the other hand, declared in February 2017 that there was not "a single journalist who was being held in Turkey for writing news."
A large group of the detainees worked for the Islamic-conservative Zaman , which was one of the highest-circulation daily newspapers in the country until it was banned in 2016 (circulation in November 2014: 895,262 copies). Another group consists of journalists from Cumhuriyet , whose publisher, editor-in-chief and at least ten other journalists have been arrested. It is one of the oldest newspapers in the country. The third large group consists of Kurdish journalists who were employed by the Kurdish media ( DİHA , Özgür Gündem etc.).
