Taraf (Turkish for “position”, “attitude”) was a national Turkish daily newspaper that appeared for the first time on November 15, 2007 and was banned in the course of the measures taken after the 2016 coup attempt . The seat of the Taraf has been in Istanbul since it was founded .

The Turkish-language edition of Le Monde diplomatique with a circulation of 70,000 copies was provided by Taraf as a monthly supplement .

Eurotopics described their political stance as liberal . She enjoyed a great reputation in the European press, she was often referred to as the "most important investigative medium" and from 2011 was a partner of Wikileaks . In 2009 the editor-in-chief Ahmet Altan received the award for the freedom and future of the media .

The newspaper played a particular role in the Ergenekon and Balyoz trials, in which high figures in the secular establishment (military and civilians) were accused of membership in a terrorist organization and of a conspiracy against Erdogan and the Gülen movement . The basis of the 9-year mammoth trial were often "secret documents" leaked to the newspaper, which were supposed to prove the conspiracy of the accused. The Taraf was considered "anti-military" and positioned itself openly for condemnation. Much of the published secret documents and evidence was convicted of forgery, and the proceedings ended with the accused being acquitted. Dani Rodrik accused the newspaper of targeted disinformation. Some accuse her of being close to the Gülen movement, which she denies.

In 2012, the newspaper ran into financial difficulties due to increased opposition to Erdoğan's government and its already low circulation. It was banned and dissolved by an ordinance on July 27, 2016 during the wave of purges following the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 .
