They are part of the measures following the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 . a. one of the restrictions on press freedom in Turkey . The imprisonment of journalists is not recorded .

overview

Following the attempted coup in July 2016 , the Council of Ministers, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, issued Emergency Decree No. 668 on July 27, 2016, which closed numerous media outlets. If the first wave of closings concerned media that were suspected of belonging to the Gülen movement or of being close to it, media that were considered pro-Kurdish or PKK- related were subsequently also closed . In addition, smaller left-wing media were also closed. The company property (real estate, inventory, etc.) was handed over to the Staatliche Treuhandanstalt TMSF and later sold by them.

There was no “individual”, ie concrete, reason, and consequently no concrete proof of guilt. In the emergency decree no. 668 it said: "The radio and television stations listed in the appendix under list no. 2 have been closed." And: "The newspapers and magazines as well as publishers and sales channels listed in the appendix under list no. 3 have been closed." In the same way, without specific justification, some closed media were later allowed again, mainly local or regional newspapers and radio stations.

The newspapers Bugün , Millet and Today's Zaman , which had been closed by emergency decree , had already been placed under state administration at the end of 2015 or at the beginning and had already ceased publication at the time of their closure. The Zaman newspaper was already being published under the direction of government administrators, as was the Cihan news agency .

The following closed media were the successors to publications whose predecessors had already been closed by emergency decree : Özgür Gündem - Özgürlükçü Demokrasi ; Azadiya Welat - Rojava Medya - Welat ; Dicle Haber Ajansı - Dihaber ; JINHA - Gazete Şûjin .

On the basis of the measures listed under individual measures and the sources named there, without taking into account the media that have been re-admitted , but taking subsequent bans into account, the following overview list results:

With the closure of the media concerned, their websites were also closed. In addition, access to various Internet sites, including news portals, was blocked. This also includes access to the Turkish-language Wikipedia, which was blocked on April 30, 2017 . Internet blocks are not included in this list.
