Azadiya Welat

Azadiya Welat was the only Kurdish- language daily newspaper that appeared in Turkey . From the 1990s it appeared as a weekly newspaper under changing names, and since August 15, 2006 daily. The editorial office was in Istanbul until 2003 before moving to Diyarbakır . The newspaper was banned in August 2016.

"Azadiya Welat" means "The freedom of the fatherland". The newspaper is often also called "Welat", "The Fatherland" for short.

Legal proceedings

The newspaper has been subject to temporary publication bans several times. These were justified by the fact that the newspaper against paragraph. 6 of the Anti-Terrorism Act No. 3713 of April 12, 1991, including propaganda for a terrorist organization (here: the Kurdistan Workers' Party ). Responsible editors were also sentenced to prison terms for the same reasons.

For the same reason, the newspaper was temporarily closed with the judgment of the 8th Istanbul District Court on August 16, 2016. During the subsequent police raid, all 27 journalists present were arrested.

Prohibition and follow-up sheets

With the Emergency Decree No. 675 of October 29, 2016, the newspaper was finally banned. With the emergency decree No. 693 of August 25, 2017, the successor newspaper Rojava Medya was banned . The follow-up newspaper Welat then appeared for almost a year before it was closed with Emergency Decree No. 701 of July 8, 2018.
