İMC TV ( spelling imc tv ) was a nationwide Turkish television broadcaster. He was often described as "pro Kurdish", although İMC rejected this classification. However, the broadcaster reported extensively on the armed conflict between government troops and the PKK in south-east Turkey. İMC TV went on air on May 1st, 2011. The station was based in Istanbul ; The founder and editor-in-chief was the journalist Eyüp Burç from Germany.

program

İMC broadcast a talk show series called “Gamurç / Köprü” (“Bridge” in Armenian and Turkish). This was the first Turkish program to deal with the Turkish-Armenian relationship , which is still tense today . The most famous face of the station was the presenter Banu Güven , who had been with İMC TV since the beginning of 2014.

İMC TV was considered one of the last independent news channels in Turkey. Gunnar Köhne ( Deutschlandfunk ) assessed the station's independence in 2013 as follows: "Whether it was about the Kurdish question, the trade unions or the protests from Taksim Square: IMC has so far been able to report unmolested about all of this."

Government pressure

However, the situation for the station became increasingly difficult during Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's presidency . In an interview with Norddeutscher Rundfunk (broadcasting station Zapp ) in early February 2016, İMC editor-in-chief Burç stated that the station was being put under pressure by the state and the television council. The broadcaster is held responsible for critical statements made by guests in İMC broadcasts. There were several proceedings and the broadcaster repeatedly had to pay high fines. Ultimately, there is a risk of losing the broadcast license.

On February 24, 2016, the Turkish Public Prosecutor's Office requested the General Directorate of Türksat to withdraw the satellite frequency from İMC for propaganda for the banned Kurdish organizations Workers' Party of Kurdistan (PKK) and Union of the Communities of Kurdistan (KCK). It was switched off on February 26, during a live interview with journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül , who had just been released from custody . Türksat terminated the contract with İMC TV because of endangering "national security". In the meantime, the station could only be received via the Internet, from February 29th it was broadcast via the Hot Bird 13 ° East satellite, which, however, is received by fewer viewers in Turkey.

On April 30, 2016, news chief Hamza Aktan was arrested by police at his apartment in Istanbul and taken for questioning for posting Twitter messages.

Closure and settlement

After the attempted coup in July 2016 , the station was closed on September 29, 2016 together with around 20 other radio and television stations by decision of the state supervisory authority RTÜK .

In the late summer of 2017, the station's property (primarily licenses and technical equipment) handed over to the state trust company TMSF was auctioned off by the latter at the highest bidder. Eyüp Burç, the station's founder, asserted that the things in question did not belong to the station - and that İMC TV, unlike most of the other media that were closed after the attempted coup, was never closed by emergency decree, which is why the foreclosure auction itself was among the Conditions of the state of emergency are illegal. Burç announced that it would also take this fact into account in the lawsuit before the European Court of Human Rights .
