JINHA

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JINHA was a news agency that all women worked for. The name comes from Jin, which means woman in Kurdish, followed by H for haber (message in Turkish) and A for ajansi (agency in Turkish). JINHA was founded in 2010 by Kurdish women and women from different nationalities worked with it. JINHA's headquarters were in Diyarbakir . Messages were written in English, Kurdish and Turkish. The aim was to use a different choice of words from the familiar and male dominated choice of words. The journalists wanted to report from the perspective of women and not portray women as a sex object. JINHA had various locations in Rojava and Turkey and one in Suleimanya in Iraq. At first the website was only accessible to subscribers. They later opened up to a wider audience and wrote publicly available articles.

Since the end of the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish government, it has become difficult for Kurdish news agencies such as JINHA to continue their work. For example, Güler Can from the JINHA office in Diyarbakir reported that published articles are being used as evidence for charges against journalists. In December 2015. Beritan Canözer while they took part in a demonstration in Diyarbakir to report from her, arrested by the police because they should have looked to "excited."

On October 29, 2016, JINHA was closed by Decree 675.
