  • As Jafariya ( Arabic الجعفرية, DMG al-Ǧaʿfarīya ) is the name given to the teaching direction followed by the Twelve Shiites in the area of Fiqh . It is traced back to the sixth Shiite Imam Jafar as-Sādiq (d. 765). Their followers call themselves Jaferites .

The most well-known peculiarities of the Jafaritic madhhab include the permission of the Mutʿa marriage and the prohibition of stroking one's shoes .

The Jafarite school of law was recognized in 1959 by al-Azhar University (Cairo) and again in the embassy from Amman (2004) just like the four traditional Sunni schools of law, but large sections of the Sunnis do not recognize the authority of the school of law to this day. The al-Azhar fatwa states:

"1) Islam does not require a Muslim to follow a particular Madh'hab (school of thought). Rather, we say: every Muslim has the right to follow one of the schools of thought which has been correctly narrated and its verdicts have been compiled in its books. And, everyone who is following such Madhahib (schools of thought) can transfer to another school, and there shall be no crime on him for doing so.
    2) The Ja'fari school of thought, which is also known as “al-Shi'a al- Imamiyyah al-Ithna Ashariyyah” (ie, The Twelver Imami Shi'ites) is a school of thought that is religiously correct to follow in worship as are other Sunni schools of thought. "

The modern current of the Wahhabis , who have taken over the Hanbaliya legal school as a special group , reject the belief of their followers (as well as all other forms of Shiite Islam) even as non-orthodox.
