Varanger is the area in the far northeast of Norway . It consists of the Varanger Peninsula, the Varangerfjord and its southern shoreline ( Sør-Varanger ) and belongs to the province of Troms og Finnmark .

Larger places are Berlevåg , Vardø , Vadsø (capital of the former province of Finnmark ) and Kirkenes . The main industries today are fishing and tourism. The extraction of iron ore in a mine near Kirkenes (Bjørnevatn) was stopped in 1996, but has since started again. Kirkenes is the northern turning point of the Hurtigruten ships.

Part of the peninsula is part of the Varangerhalvøya National Park .
