Hamningberg is an abandoned fishing village in Northern Norway , which is only used as a holiday resort today. The place on the Barents Sea before the border with Russia belongs to the municipality of Båtsfjord in the administrative district of Troms og Finnmark . Because the village was spared the destruction of the German occupiers during World War II , the buildings are considered to be the best preserved of the fishing settlements in Finnmark according to the Riksantikvaren monument protection authority .

Glory act of sea rescue

The place gained a certain fame in Norway through the rescue trip of the RS 1 "Colin Archer", the first lifeboat of the newly founded Norwegian sea rescue company Redningsselskapet . In 1894, the sailing lifeboat constructed by Colin Archer was lying in the port of Vardø when a violent northeast hurricane whipped into the port of Hamningberg, 20 kilometers away, on May 20th that year . There, in the middle of the harbor, a fishing boat with 22 people on board came into distress . Despite the storm and poor visibility, the foreman of RS 1 set off on a dangerous journey. The steamship Heimdal , which started at the same time, did not make it through the steep waves and had to turn back. A sailboat one had no chances given and kept the ride for suicide. But the foreman managed the hussar piece with many turning maneuvers in the harbor bay and got everyone off board in single approaches. Mooring in Hamningberg was not possible and therefore the "Colin Archer" sailed back. On the same evening another call for help from Hamningberg reached the rescuers, who then left again. And again the three rescue men managed to pick up 14 fishermen, whose ship then crashed into the surf .

The extremely robust construction with high stability made the journey possible. Colin Archer thus cemented his reputation, which he had already achieved by building the Fram for the Norwegian polar explorers. The Redningsselskapet procured a whole series of these sailing lifeboats and named them Colin Archer class . Ships of this type are now regarded as icons and are still used as private pleasure craft.
