Etkin Haber Ajansı (abbreviated to ETHA) ( German  roughly: “active” or “effective” news agency ) is a news agency founded in 2010 and based in Istanbul .

The Turkish authorities locate them in the environment of the (legal) Socialist Party of the Oppressed or the banned Marxist-Leninist Communist Party (MLKP), which is classified as terrorist in Turkey . Agency employees, on the other hand, describe them as "socialist but independent". Time and again, reporters and editors from ETHA were accused or even arrested for membership in the MLKP or for propaganda for it.

The agency became known in Germany through the German-Turkish journalist and ETHA employee Meşale Tolu , who was arrested in May 2015 - also on charges of membership in the MLKP. At the end of 2016, an investigation was initiated against news chief Derya Okatan in connection with the emails leaked by the RedHack hacker group from the then Turkish energy minister Berat Albayrak . Unlike Tunca Öğreten and two other journalists, she was released after 23 days in police custody and was not taken into custody, but is on trial with them and two other journalists.

In April 2018, a total of six employees of the agency were in custody, including the German-Turkish Adil Demirci .

In July 2015, after the end of the armistice between the Turkish state and the PKK , access to the ETHA website was blocked in Turkey. This ban continues to exist (as of August 2018).

Özgür Radyo

There were close personal overlaps between ETHA and the news broadcaster Özgür Radyo (“Free Radio”). This has been broadcasting in Istanbul and the Marmara region since 1995 . The state supervisory authority RTÜK imposed long broadcast bans on the broadcaster several times ; From 1995 to 2003, the station was banned from broadcasting for a total of three years and nine months because of such penalties. During this time, Özgür Radyo broadcast over the Internet and was one of the first Turkish radio stations to offer streaming .

While ETHA was not affected by the wave of media closures following the attempted coup in July 2016 , Özgür Radyo was withdrawn and closed by decree of the supervisory authority on September 29, 2016.
