Erol Önderoğlu (* 1969 in Erzincan ) is a Turkish journalist .

Önderoğlu studied French philology at Istanbul University and has been working as a journalist since 1995. He has been the Turkey reporter and representative for Reporters Without Borders since 1996 . He has also been working for the Bianet news site since 1997 .

In 2014 he received the award for press freedom from the Turkish journalists' association Türkiye Gazeteciler Cemiyeti . On June 20, 2016, he was arrested in Turkey for “terrorist propaganda” . Together with the journalist Ahmet Nesin and the human rights activist Şebnem Korur Fincancı , he is accused of supporting the Kurdish organization Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) with his work, which is also classified as terrorist in Germany . Ten days later, Önderoğlu was released from custody under certain conditions.

The background to the legal proceedings was Önderoğlu's participation in a solidarity campaign for the Kurdish-Turkish daily Özgür Gündem . From May to August 2016, journalists took on the role of co-editor-in-chief of the newspaper for one day per forma. Legal proceedings were opened against 38 of the participants.

Önderoğlu is married to Serpil Önderoğlu. The couple has a son.
