Şebnem Korur Fincancı
Rasime Şebnem Korur Fincancı (born March 21, 1959 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish professor of forensic medicine , human rights activist and a leading international expert on torture documentation.
In December 2018, Fincancı was finally sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for co-signing the academics' joint appeal for peace .
Career
Fincancı attended Kadıköy Maarif Koleji and then studied human medicine at the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty of Istanbul University . She married and had a daughter in 1985. She completed her compulsory year as a doctor in Gaziantep . The husband stayed in Istanbul. She made her specialist in forensics in 1987. From 1987 to 1990 Fincancı completed a bachelor's degree in classical archeology at Istanbul University. The degree Docent in forensic medicine she received in 1992. She qualified in 1996 in forensic medicine and devoted himself to the fight against torture, which was widespread in the 1980s and 1990s in Turkey. In 1997, she headed the forensic medicine department of the Istanbul University Medical Faculty. In 1999 Fincancı founded the medical faculty’s first forensic polyclinic. Fincancı was fired in 2004, but she fought to be reinstated in 2005.
activities
In 1992 Fincancı co-founded the Medical Association of Forensic Doctors and from 1993 to 1996 she headed the association. Fincancı was instrumental in drafting the Istanbul Protocol . This is the standard work of the United Nations for the investigation and documentation of torture. In 1996 she was involved in the exhumation of mass graves and autopsies for the International Criminal Court in Bosnia. Fincancı has headed the Turkey Human Rights Foundation since 2009 . Fincancı was u. a. involved in solving the cases of Baki Erdoğan and Süleyman Yeter, who died under torture.
In 2014 she received the 2014 Hrant Dink Prize and in 2018 the Hessian Peace Prize. Fincancı was a member of the Executive Council of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and convicted a department head for organized crime of the Turkish police of torture.
In 2016, Fincancı was arrested with Erol Önderoğlu and Ahmet Nesin and spent ten days in police custody. In a pro forma solidarity campaign, the arrested had taken over the management of Özgür Gündem , which acted as the mouthpiece of the Kurdistan Workers' Party . This was followed in 2018 by a 2.5-year prison sentence for signing an appeal. In front of the court, she commented on the judgment based on Émile Zola with the words: I indict .
