Can Merey

Can Merey (* 1972 ) in Frankfurt am Main is a German journalist.

Career

Merey was born to a Turkish father and a German mother and studied social work in Aachen . He then worked as a freelance journalist in Istanbul before beginning a traineeship at the German Press Agency (dpa) in 1999 . He worked as an editor in the political department in Berlin and went to New Delhi in 2003 , where he took over the management of the dpa South Asia office. In particular, reported on the conflict in Afghanistan .

In 2013 he moved to Istanbul, where he became dpa office manager for the Middle East with a focus on Turkey reporting. During this time he attracted particular attention with a written interview with the journalist Deniz Yücel , who was imprisoned in Turkey at the time.

On July 1, 2018, Merey took over the management of the dpa office in Washington .

His book The Eternal Guest , published in spring, was received positively by critics. “The ruthlessness with which father and son describe their conflict and alienation is astonishing, their openness makes the two-generation report worth reading,” said Christiane Schlötzer in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . And Jürgen Gottschlich said in the taz : “On the one hand, Can Merey wrote a very personal report about his family, his father and himself.
