Etyen Mahçupyan

Etyen Mahçupyan (* 1950 in Istanbul ) is an Armenian- Turkish journalist.

Life

Education and career

Mahçupyan graduated from Robert College in 1968 and Bosphorus University in 1972 with an engineering degree . From 1977 he studied economics at the University of Ankara . There he worked as a lecturer until 1980. Between 1980 and 1996 he worked as an entrepreneur.

Journalistic activity

From 1996 to 2000 Mahçupyan was a columnist for the Turkish daily Radikal . In 2000 he switched to the Yeni Binyıl newspaper . In May 2001 he became a columnist for the Gülen movement -related daily newspaper Zaman . After the murder of Hrant Dink in January 2007, he succeeded him as editor-in-chief of the weekly Agos, which appears in the Armenian and Turkish languages . He resigned from this position in November 2010 and began writing for Zaman again. In May 2014, he moved to Akşam . At the beginning of 2016, he ended this activity because the editorial team had removed a column from him from their website. He has been writing for the daily Karar since it was first published .

Political activity

In April 2013 Mahçupyan was appointed by the then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to a commission called the “Council of Wise Men” , which was supposed to support the peaceful end to the conflict with the Kurdish PKK in civil society , but ultimately remained quite ineffective.

In 2015 Mahçupyan became chief advisor to Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu . On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in 1915 and the statement made by Pope Francis on April 12, 2015, Mahçupyan said that it is impossible not to speak of genocide if the acts in Bosnia and Africa are described as genocide. The next day, Mahçupyan resigned from his position as chief advisor.
