The Boğaziçi Üniversitesi ( German : Bosporus University ) is a state university based in the European part of the city of Istanbul not far from the Bosporus . It is divided into four faculties (Arts + Sciences, Economics + Admin. Sciences, Education, Engineering), 2 schools (Applied Disciplines, Foreign Languages) and 6 institutes. A total of 32 Bachelor, 59 Master and 33 doctoral programs are offered. The language of instruction is English. The university is spatially distributed over six campuses: South, North, Hisar, Uçaksavar, Kilyos-Saritepe and Kandilli.

Boğaziçi Üniversitesi is the leading university in Turkey: It is the only university in Turkey that is included in the global Top100 lists for university rankings and has partnerships with many renowned universities worldwide. The most sought-after programs are electrical engineering , computer science, and industrial engineering . Only the best 800 of the total of 1.7 million participants in the annual Turkish university entrance examination (YGS-LYS) are admitted to register for these subjects at the Bosporus University. In the other subjects, too, you usually have to belong to the top 1% of the university entrance examination.

The proportion of foreigners is high for a Turkish university: with around 830 foreign students from 95 countries, this corresponds to a share of around 5%.

The Boğaziçi Üniversitesi emerged in 1971 from the Robert College founded in 1863 , the first US university outside the United States. Even today there are close ties to academic life in the USA. However, this relationship has suffered as a result of the political tensions between Turkey and the USA. For example, the exchange programs with American universities were suspended in the 2017 winter semester.

Academic restrictions following the attempted coup in 2016

In March 2017, professors gathered on the university campus to protest against government interference. Two professors at Boğaziçi Üniversitesi were dismissed: Professor Abbas Vali from the Sociology Department and Associate Professor Noemi Levy-Aksu from the History Department were removed from their posts on February 22, 2017 by the Turkish University Council (YÖK) . The background is seen in the fact that both of them signed a petition for the “ Academics for Peace ” initiative at the beginning of 2016 , which led to the Academics for Peace process .

The College of Boğaziçi Üniversitesi was the first university college to protest against the dismissal of professors from its ranks. In a press release, other universities were called upon to copy.
