Behice Tezçakar Özdemir

Behice Tezçakar-Özdemir (* 1979 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish author , historian , expert on Ottoman scripts and industrial history, and lecturer in history at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul.

Live and act

Behice Tezcakar was born in Istanbul and grew up on the Bosporus . The author designed caricatures, which she interpreted with humor and serious texts, and began writing as a child with a sketch for the neighborhood theater.

Behice Tezcakar attended Çengelköy Primary School and Kandilli Girls High School. She then graduated from Istanbul Bilgi University , which she graduated with a successful scholarship as a top student in the Faculty of Science and Literature in 2004. She then graduated from the Department of History at Boğaziçi University with a master’s degree. She received her B.A. in history as the best of the year at Istanbul Bilgi University. She received her master's degree from the Department of History at Boğaziçi University .

Behice Tezcakar specialized in the Turkish-German labor relations and roles of German companies and firms during the industrial development of Ottoman territories, including today's Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans. Her publication Discovery of Oil in the Heads and Countries of the Ottoman Empire was published in 2009. Özdemir is co-author of Daheim in Konstantinopel - German traces on the Bosporus from 1850 (Turkish: Memleketimiz Dersaadet 1850'den itibaren Boğaziçi'nde Alman izleri ), published by Palm and Enke Verlag in Germany (2013).

Her book “History of Siemens from the Empire to the Republic - In the Light of Documents from the State Archives” (Turkish: İmparatorluk'tan Cumhuriyet'e Siemens Tarihi-Devlet Arşivlerinden Belgelerle ) was published on the 160th anniversary of Siemens (2016). In this work the different areas of the Ottoman Empire like Constantinople , Baghdad , Basra , Fao , Sudan , Mosul , Aleppo , Tripoli , Rhodes , Thessaloniki are on behalf of the industrial activities in different sectors like communication , mobility , energy and industry , defense, cities and building technology, people, resources and healthcare.

In 2018 she headed the Thyssen Krupp research project, which examined the defense, iron and steel industries of the Germans through the Thyssen Krupp company in Ottoman countries (in the Balkans, Asia Minor, the Middle East and North Africa ) during the Prussian period . She prepared an investigation report for the company BASF on the activity of the German chemical industry in the Ottoman period.

The author, who bases her research on archival documents, knows both the Ottoman and the bureaucratic language of the state administration of the time. Behice Tezcakar is the founder and managing editor of Atlas Tarih (Atlas History Magazine) of Doganburda Publishing, the media company of Hürriyet Newspaper in Istanbul.

Tezcakar has so far (as of 2020) written 80 articles for various magazines and newspapers such as Hürriyet , Milliyet , Radikal and Yapı Kredi Cogito, Atlas Tarih. In addition, she has written three Turkish history books on the subject of Mehmed the Conqueror , Suleyman the Magnificent and Abdülhamid II .

Behice Özdemir is a member of the Darüşşafaka Yüksek İstişare Kurulu (Darüşşafaka Advisory Board), a high school for orphans in Istanbul. She gives lectures at the Turkish-German University (TDU) in Istanbul and is committed to the German-Turkish dialogue.

In addition to the Yaşar Nabi Nayır Poetry Prize of Varlık Magazine 2009, the author has received other awards for her poems and scripts.
