history

Palm und Enke Verlag was founded in Erlangen in 1815 when Ernst Enke (1782–1846) took over the bookstore of his father-in-law Johann Jakob Palm (1750–1826) on July 1st. As a complement to the book trade, Enke built up his own scientific publishing house. He almost exclusively published works by professors from the University of Erlangen . Company founder Ernst Enke ran the publishing house until his death in 1846. Between 1815 and 1836, Ernst Enke published the complete documents of the Congress of Vienna published in nine volumes by Johann Ludwig Klüber under the title Acts of the Vienna Congress in 1814 and 1815 , including the Vienna final Act .

His son Adolph Enke continued to run the publishing house until 1873, while his brother Ferdinand Enke (1810–1869) took over the bookstore. Like his father, Ferdinand Enke founded his own publishing house as the owner of the bookstore, the medical specialist publisher Ferdinand Enke. His son Alfred Enke (1852–1937) moved it to Stuttgart, where it is run as an imprint publisher under the umbrella of the Thieme publishing group .

Palm & Enke Verlag, on the other hand, was still active in Erlangen: Carl Enke (1854–1939), who took over the publishing house from his father from 1876, continued to run the Wissenschaftsverlag until 1908, when he ceded it to his mother-in-law Luise Finckh due to financial difficulties. The bookstore also stayed in Erlangen: Ferdinand Enke sold it to Theodor Krische (1840–1889). His son Friedrich Krische (1873-1959), who continued the bookstore, succeeded in reuniting the bookstore and publisher in 1912 when he took over Palm and Enke from Luise Finckh.

The publishing business was suspended between 1914 and 1918, as Friedrich Krische was called up for military service.

During the Weimar Republic , Krische succeeded in buying up two more bookstores in Erlangen, thereby strengthening its sales network. He acquired the Max Mencke bookstore at the end of 1918 and the Theodor Blaesing university bookstore in 1927. In 1924, he opened the Krische & Co. university bookstore in Nuremberg. After 1918, the publisher began to publish legal literature and continued to grow as a university publisher. From 1933 on, the regional and homeland literature program was added to the academic textbook area. Texts on regional history, geography, culture and folklore were published, including the first volumes of the yearbook for Franconian regional research . The orientation of the University of Erlangen towards the National Socialist ideology was reflected in the scientific publishing program. The last book to be published by the publisher during National Socialism was published in 1941 . In 1944 the Reichsschrifttumskammer ordered the publishing house to be closed.

After the end of the war, Das war Christian-Erlang appeared in 1950 . Reports on the intellectual history of the University of Erlangen in the first century of its existence by Hans-Joachim Schoeps the first book by Palm & Enke. After Friedrich Krische's death in 1959, his widow Margarete and his long-term business partner Karl Ströver took over the publishing business. In 1977 the Palm and Enke Verlag and the bookstores Krische and Mencke-Blaesing were owned by Marga Matthäus-Krische (daughter of Friedrich Krische), Hans-Richard Bartels and Klaus Matthäus, the grandson of Friedrich Krische.

The opening of the publishing bookstore Palm & Enke on Erlanger Schlossplatz in 1982 by Hans-Richard Bartels and Klaus Matthäus also led to a renewed intensification of the publishing activities. Scientific series such as the Erlangen Studien and titles with regional references are published by the publisher on commission. The publishing house attracted particular attention in the 1980s with standard works on the history of Erlangen, such as Erlangen. From the Strumpfer- for Siemens city , historical reprints with travelogues and with the series Erlanger studies on ethics in medicine . From the German-German reunification in 1990, the publishing house cooperated with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and its institutions. Among other things, the Jena University Speeches and the series of publications by the collegium europaeum Jenense were published. In the 1990s, the Palm & Enke bookstore ranked 33rd among Germany's most successful bookstores.

In 2002 Thalia Holding acquired the book trade division. Once again, the publishing house and book trade were separated. Ursula Matthäus-Eisenbraun and Klaus Matthäus continue to run Palm and Enke Verlag.

In 2010 the Erlangen entrepreneurs Sabine and Ralf Birke took over the publishing house. They converted the science publisher into a media service provider for companies as well as science and research. Compared to the expiring scientific commission business, nonfiction and specialist books with a regional reference are becoming increasingly important. As an independent program area, Palm and Enke has been running the cabaret and literature program of the previously independent publisher Edition Spielbein since 2014. In 2015 the company celebrated its 200th anniversary with an exhibition.
