Vedat Demir (born April 10, 1966 in Sinop ) is a Turkish communication scientist and journalist. He was a professor in the Department of Public Relations and Publicity at Istanbul University , where he taught communication studies, media ethics, media and policy making.

Life and academic career

Demir earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Marmara University and PhD degrees from Istanbul University . From 2011 onwards he was Professor in the Faculty of Communication Studies at Istanbul University and between 2012 and 2014 visiting professor at Ithaca College of Communication and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York for Middle East Studies.

From 2002 to 2003 he was Secretary General of the Turkish Press Council.

His studies focus on the role of the media in democracies and in the formation of public opinion. As a writer, he has published works related to the media: "Medya Etiği (Media Ethics)" (2006); “Türkiye'de Medya Siyaset İlişkisi (The Relationship between Media and Politics in Turkey)” (2007) and “Kamu Diplomasisi ve Yumuşak Güç (Public Diplomacy and Soft Power)” in 2012.

Purges in Turkey

Demir criticized Turkey's increasingly authoritarian situation. In columns and television appearances, he emphasized democratic values, human rights and the rule of law.

A group of Turkish intellectuals, including Demir, started a petition in 2015 called "Silence the Guns". This sought the reconciliation of the Turkish government with Kurdish militants in order to end the ongoing war in eastern Turkey.

In response to the bans on newspapers and TV stations, Demir criticized the government in the newspaper Yarına Bakış , Zaman's successor .

On July 20, 2016, Demir and 95 colleagues from the University of Istanbul were dismissed from their work and academic position. Demir was arrested by police at 3:30 a.m. on July 24th for academic statements and journalistic activities. The police ransacked his home and office and arrested him. Pretrial detention was imposed on August 3. While in custody, he was denied all contact with a lawyer and family. The reason was the alleged involvement in the attempted coup in July . Demir denied any involvement and publicly denounced the coup attempt in his column.

Media close to the government cite WhatsApp messages from Demir, according to which everything is just a play and Erdoǧan wants civil war. They will all get on their necks if the coup fails. Then a "one-man-fascism" will rule.

On September 2, 2016, Demir was officially suspended from his duties at Istanbul University.

Demir was released from Silivri Detention Center seven months after his detention , but is not allowed to leave the country.
