Gabriele Del Grande (* 1982 in Lucca ) is an Italian journalist , blogger , writer and human rights activist . He is one of Europe's leading human rights activists in the field of illegally immigrated people in Italy and Europe.

Life

Gabriele Del Grande studied history and oriental studies in Bologna . He also trained as a journalist at the Lelio Basso Foundation in Rome .

In 2006 he founded the blog Fortress Europe, a forum that deals with the problem of illegally immigrated people and is unique in this form in Europe. Since 2007 he has been actively following the routes of people from various countries whose fates he is following. He visited Turkey , Greece , Tunisia , Morocco and the associated Western Sahara , Mauritania , Mali and Senegal . In Libya , he visited a prison for refugees in Zlitan , from where he reported on the inhumane treatment of those interned there.

In May 2007 his first book was published in Italy, which showed the problem of refugees by means of individual fates.

Del Grande lives in Rome and works for the news agency redattore sociale .

In 2014 he was one of the co-authors and co-directors of the semi-documentary " Io sto con la sposa " ( At the Bride's Side ), which won a special prize at the Venice International Film Festival in 2014 .

On April 10, 2017, he was arrested in Hatay Province, Turkey, near the border with Syria . Del Grande was temporarily denied contact with his lawyer, and he went on a hunger strike. On April 24, 2017, he was released from custody and deported to Italy.
