Zehra Doğan (2016)

Zehra Doğan (* 1989 in Diyarbakır , Turkey ) is a Kurdish artist and journalist. She gained worldwide fame because she was imprisoned for almost three years because of a picture she painted showing the Turkish military in the embattled Kurdish city of Nusaybin.

Journalistic activity

Zehra Doğan studied art at Dicle University in Diyarbakır. In 2010 she was a founding member of the women-led news agency JINHA . She worked for JINHA from 2010 until she was arrested in July 2016. JINHA was closed by Presidential Decree (Decree 675) on October 29, 2016 on the grounds that JINHA was an organization associated with terrorist groups and thus directed against the national security of the state. She reported from the cities of Cizre and Nusaybin , where curfews were imposed, as well as from Sinjar and Rojava and other conflict zones. She received the Metin Gölktepe Prize for her report on the Yazidis in Sinjar.

In prison she founded the newspaper Özgür Gündem Zindan with fellow prisoners

Trial and Detention

In July 2016, she was arrested in Mardin and taken into custody. She was charged with propaganda for a terrorist organization and membership in a terrorist organization. In December 2016, she was released pending the sentencing. In March 2017, she was sentenced to 2 years, 9 months and 22 days in prison for a picture she painted from a photograph of Nusaybin taken by the Turkish military during the state of emergency. On June 2, 2017, the judgment was upheld by the court of appeal. She started her sentence on June 12, 2017 and was initially detained in Diyarbakir Prison. During the detention, Doğan tried to be artistically active and creative and painted with all materials accessible to her, e.g. B. drinks, leftover food and menstrual blood, pictures on newspaper, etc.

After almost three years in prison, she was released from prison on February 24, 2019.
