- March 17th : premiere of the operetta Die Afrikareise by Franz von Suppè in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- April 14 : The opera Lakmé by Léo Delibes with the libretto by Edmond Gondinet based on the novel Rarahu ou Le Mariage de Loti by Pierre Loti experienced at the Paris Opéra-Comique its premiere .
- May 5 : The opera Henry VIII by Camille Saint-Saëns with a libretto by Pierre-Léonce Détroyat and Paul-Armand Silvestre based on Pedro Calderón de la Barca's historical drama La cisma de Ingalaterra is premiered at the Grand Opéra Paris .
- October 3rd : The operetta One Night in Venice by Johann Strauss (son) is premiered at the New Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtisches Theater in Berlin . The Viennese operetta of the golden era with the texts by Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée fails with audience and critics alike. Only a revised version, which premieres in the Theater an der Wien on October 9th , is successful.
