Petar Konjović

Petar Konjović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Петар Коњовић , born May 5, 1883 in Čurug , † October 1, 1970 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav composer, music teacher and scholar.

Konjović studied in Prague with Vítězslav Novák . He was a choirmaster, teacher and from 1921 to 1926 director of the opera in Belgrade . He then directed the theaters of Osijek, Split, Novi Sad and from 1933 to 1939 the National Theater in Zagreb . Until 1950 he taught at the Belgrade Music Academy; he was also director of the Belgrade Institute of Musicology between 1948 and 1955.

He composed six operas, a symphony, a symphonic poem, a symphonic triptych, symphonic variations, three psalms for string orchestra, a violin concerto, chamber music works, piano works, Yugoslav folk song arrangements and song cycles.

Since 1991 the Society of Music and Ballet Educators has organized the International Competition for Young Musicians Petar Konjović .
