Manuel Gregorio Tavárez (born November 28, 1843 in San Juan , † July 1, 1883 in Ponce ) was a Puerto Rican composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Tavarez had piano lessons with José Cabrizas and Domingo Delgado in his native town . Because of his significant talent, the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País awarded him a scholarship that enabled him to study at the Conservatoire de Paris with Aubert and d'Albert from 1858 . Here his Gran fantasía de concierto for piano and orchestra was written.

After only ten months, illness forced him to return to Puerto Rico, where he worked as a piano teacher in San Juan, Caguas and, from 1870, in Ponce. His students included u. a. Juan Morel Campos and Francisco Cortés .

In Ponce he turned to the composition of Puerto Rican dancas , in which he combined Cuban dancas with European harmonics and melodies and influences from African music. These works earned him the reputation of Padre de la Danza Puertorriqueña .

In addition to danzas such as Margarita , Ausencia , and Pobre corazón , waltzes such as El 24 de junio and the Vals de Concierto and the Cuadros musicales ( Recuerdos de antaño , Virgen de Borinquen , Dicha fugaz and La hamaca ), Tavárez also composed two symphonies: A Campeche and Souvenir de Puerto Rico ( Aires del país ). With the March Redención , he won the music competition at the Ponce Mass in 1882. As a song composer he has performed with Súplica a mis amigos by José Gautier Benítez . He also published two collections of Puerto Rican music: Album Filharmónica (1863) and El Delirio Puertorriqueño (1867–69).
