Fritz Windgassen
Fritz Windgassen (born February 9, 1883 in Lennep near Remscheid , † April 17, 1963 in Murnau ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).
Life
According to his parents' wishes, Windgassen should take up a decent job. After being praised by Prince Heinrich of Prussia for his singing abilities as chief machine officer , he ventured into the singing career. After training at the Bernuth Conservatory in Hamburg , he made his debut as an opera singer in Harburg in 1909 . Further engagements took him to Bremen , Hamburg and the Hoftheater Kassel , where he met his wife, the coloratura soprano Vali von der Osten (1882–1923), and married in 1916. From 1923 to 1945 he was a member of the Stuttgart State Opera . From 1919 he sang more and more roles in the field of hero tenor and became a great Wagner singer.
Windgassen was also a successful concert and lied singer. In 1949 he gave his farewell concert in Stuttgart, in which his son Wolfgang Windgassen (1914–1974) also took part, with songs by Richard Strauss , Gustav Mahler and Hugo Wolf . After retiring from the stage, he worked at the Stuttgart Music Academy .
