Musical theater
- February 5th : The opera Otello by Giuseppe Verdi based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare with the libretto by Arrigo Boito is premiered with triumphant success at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Only Verdi himself is not satisfied with the performance. Francesco Tamagno sings the title role of Otello, Romilda Pantaleoni sings Desdemona and Victor Maurel sings Iago.
