Hipólito Lázaro

Hipólito Lázaro (born September 13, 1887 in Barcelona ; † May 14, 1974 ibid) was a Spanish opera singer (tenor).

Life

Lázaro had his first musical experiences as a member of a military band during his army service. Without any special vocal training he made his debut at the Teatro Novedades in 1910 in the opera La favorita . He then studied in Milan with Ernesto Colli and performed in England under the name Antonio Manuele . In 1913 Pietro Mascagni chose him for the role of Ugo in the world premiere of his opera Parisina at La Scala in Milan .

Lázaro made his debut with Rigoletto at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and at the Metropolitan Opera . During this time he often appeared with María Barrientos and José Mardones . At the Teatro Colón he appeared in Francesca da Rimini and in Tomás Bretón's opera La Dolores . He has also made guest appearances in opera houses in Mexico, Montevideo, Havana, Paris and Vienna and in 1921 took part in the performance of Mascagni's Piccolo Marat at the Teatro Costanzi and Umberto Giordano's La cena delle beffe at La cena delle beffe in Milan. He sang roles in Madama Butterfly , I puritani , Isabeau and Cavalleria rusticana and performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid alongside Ofelia Nieto in Aida .

During the Spanish Civil War , Lázaro briefly directed the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona. In 1940 he gave his farewell concert in New York, but appeared again in 1944 at the Teatro Liceu . He lived in Havana for several years, where he had his last appearances in 1950. After the Cuban Revolution , he returned to his hometown. A number of records from His Master's Voice and Columbia Records have been preserved.
