Tomás Bretón (born December 29, 1850 in Salamanca , † December 2, 1923 in Madrid ) was a Spanish composer.

Life

Tomás Bretón came from a poor background, was very musical and studied the violin so successfully that he became concertmaster of the theater orchestra in his hometown at the age of 14. Then he continued his education in Madrid . Here he soon began to compose and achieved initial success. He finally turned to opera and zarzuela and was able to perform his first works in 1874 and 1875. Scholarships then made it possible for him to stay abroad. After his return to the Spanish capital he was able to surpass his previous successes and at the end of the 19th century was considered one of the most outstanding representatives of the Spanish music scene. His opera The Lovers of Teruel was given five times at the Vienna Court Opera . He also worked as a composition teacher at the Madrid Conservatory and as a music writer.

In 1901 he became director of the Madrid Conservatory. He held this position until his retirement in 1921. He made efforts to modernize teaching at the institution and to expand its international orientation. He died in Madrid on December 2, 1923.

meaning

Bretón was one of the main exponents of Spanish opera and the renaissance of zarzuela in the second half of the 19th century. In addition to his popular stage works, he also created some purely instrumental works.
