Francesco Tamagno
Francesco Tamagno (born December 28, 1850 in Turin , Kingdom of Sardinia , † August 31, 1905 in Varese , Kingdom of Italy ) was an Italian opera singer ( tenor ).
Life
Tamagno initially worked as a craftsman. He had a very strong tenor voice, which predestined him for dramatic roles. In 1874 he had to spontaneously take over the leading role in Poliuto from Gaetano Donizetti .
Giuseppe Verdi first wrote the tenor part for him in the revised version by Simon Boccanegra . He later saw him play the title role in his opera Otello after Verdi initially favored Giovanni Battista de Negri. Tamagno had brilliant top notes, while de Negri corresponded more to modern, veristic vocal ideas. He also sang Tannhauser. Tamagno finally sang the world premiere of Otello, which was a huge success. De Negri and Tamagno celebrated triumphs in this role as Otello in the following years. Verdi had composed the Otello neither for one nor the other singer. In 1902 Tamagno retired from the stage.
