Jean Désiré Artôt

Jean Désiré Montagney Artôt (born September 23, 1803 in Paris , † March 25, 1887 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode ) was a Belgian horn player .

Artôt's father was a solo horn player at the Brussels Opera, guitar and violin virtuoso. As a singer, his father called himself Maurice Montagney , a name that Jean Désiré also used. Jean Désiré received both singing lessons and lessons on the horn from his father. In 1843 he became professor of horn at the Conservatory in Brussels , and in 1849 principal horn in the private chapel of the Belgian king.

Artôt wrote 24 etudes for horn as well as fantasies and quartets for horns and cornets à pistons .

His brother Alexandre Joseph Artôt was a violinist and composer in Brussels , his daughter Marguerite-Josephine-Désirée Artôt a famous mezzo-soprano.
