Désirée Artôt de Padilla (born July 16, 1835 in Paris , † April 3, 1907 in Berlin or Vienna ; born Montageney ) was an opera singer with a mezzo-soprano voice .

Life

Désirée Artôt was of Belgian origin and a student of Pauline Viardot-Garcia . She made her debut in Brussels in 1857 and was employed a year later at the Paris Grand Opera and then at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan . In December 1859 she came from there to Berlin and accepted an engagement with the newly founded Italian Opera at the Victoria Theater . She stayed there until 1861.

In the following years she was a guest in leading opera houses across Europe.

In 1868 the Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky fell in love with her. However, the planned wedding was thwarted by her mother and friends of the composer. In 1869 she married the Spanish baritone Mariano Padilla y Ramos . The daughter Dolores de Padilla emerged from the marriage and made a career as a soprano at the Berlin Court Opera (1909–1927) under the name Lola Artôt de Padilla .
