George J. Webb
George J (ames) Webb (born June 24, 1803 in Rushmore Lodge near Salisbury / Wiltshire , † October 7, 1887 in Orange / New Jersey ) was an American organist and composer.
Webb was initially an organist in Falmouth, England. In 1830 he went to Boston , where he was the organist at the Old South Church for nearly forty years . He also worked as an organist at the Church of the New Jerusalem . With Lowell Mason he founded the Boston Academy of Music in 1832 . He composed various choir and organ works. In 1837 he published the songbook The Odeon: A Collection of Secular Melodies with Mason , which for the first time contained his most famous tune , the WEBB Hymn , here to the text Tis Dawn, The Lark Is Singing . In The Wesleyan Psalmist (1842) it was underlaid with the text The Morning Light Is Breaking , in the song book The Golden Chain , published in New York in 1861 , it appeared in the most common version today with the text of Pastor George Duffield Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus .
