Justin Holland
Justin Holland (born July 26, 1819 in Norfolk County , Virginia , † March 24, 1887 in New Orleans ) was an African American guitarist , guitar teacher and composer .

Holland grew up as the first or second of seven sons of a free farmer in Norfolk County. After the death of his parents, he went to Boston when he was fourteen. Here he met the Spanish guitarist Mariano Perez and took guitar lessons from William Schubert . When Simon Knaebel he learned music theory and arrangement, and he took flute and piano lessons.
After a year of study at Oberlin College in 1841, he went to Mexico for two years. On his return he married and settled in Cleveland in 1844 as a guitar, mandolin, piano and flute teacher. He composed more than three hundred arrangements for the guitar (including William Tell by Gioacchino Rossini , Oberon by Carl Maria von Weber ) and more than thirty independent works, only a few of which have survived. He published two guitar schools: Holland's Comprehensive Method for the Guitar (1874) and Holland's Modern Method for the Guitar (1876).
