Musical theater
- January 23rd : The first performance of the melodramatic opera Königskinder by Engelbert Humperdinck with the libretto by Elsa Bernstein , who wrote it under the pseudonym Ernst Rosmer, takes place with success at the Hoftheater in Munich.
- March 7th : The world premiere of the comic opera Le Tonnelier de Nuremberg by Louis Lacombe takes place in Koblenz.
- March 13 : premiere of the operetta Die Göttin der Vernunft by Johann Strauss (son) in the Theater an der Wien . It is the last operetta by the composer that came out during his lifetime.
- April 11 : premiere of the opera Gernot by Eugen d'Albert in Mannheim.
- May 6th : The opera La Bohème by Ruggero Leoncavallo , who also wrote the libretto, is premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Like Giacomo Puccini 's opera of the same name from the previous year, the plot is based on the novel Les scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger , but is more closely based on the original. Competing work on the same subject ended the original friendship between Puccini and Leoncavallo. With his work, Leoncavallo never comes close to Puccini's success. Mimi's first female singer is the native Venetian Rosina Storchio .
- May 25 : World premiere of the Ballet Victoria and Merrie England by Arthur Sullivan at the Alhambra Theater, Leicester Square London.
- October 2nd : The opera Porin (Demeter) by Vatroslav Lisinski is premiered in Zagreb.
- November 27th : The opera L'Arlesiana by Francesco Cilea is premiered at the Teatro Lirico in Milan .
- November 27 : Premiere of the opera Sapho by Jules Massenet at the Opéra-Comique (Paris) .
