Willy Schootemeijer

Willy Schootemeijer (born February 2, 1897 in Rotterdam ; † May 11, 1953 there ) was a Dutch composer .

His father wanted him to learn a commercial profession. But he preferred to pursue his music and play the piano and accordion . He played in various entertainment and dance orchestras. To make a living he wrote songs for music hall revues and spectacle music for various operetta companies in the Netherlands. He learned instrumentation for wind orchestra from the conductor P. Ommes . His first March Groot Rotterdam dates back to 1929 and is still popular. In total he composed around 50 marches. The best known was Koning Voetbal (King of Football), inspired by an international match between the Netherlands and Belgium in 1934 , his march De Rode Duivels (The Red Devils), which was chosen as the official march of the Belgian national football team, and his tango song Ik hou van Holland (I love Holland).
