Ernesto Cortázar Hernández (born December 10, 1897 in Tampico , Tamaulipas , † November 30, 1953 at Lagos de Moreno , Jalisco ) was a Mexican composer, writer, actor, director and film producer.

In 1926, Cortázar founded the quintet Los Trovadores Tamaulipecos with Lorenzo Barcelata , Alberto Caballero , Antonio García Planes and Andrés Cortés Castillo , with whom he performed Mexican music and appeared in Arcady Boytler's film Mano a Mano in 1932 . In 1935 he became head of the radio station XEFO . He wrote numerous texts on songs by Manuel Esperón , Juan S. Garrido , Manuel Saber Marroquín and Luis Alcaraz , some of which were also used as film scores. Songs like Ay Jalisco no te rajes , El corrido villista , Cuando tú me quieras , Esos altos , No volveré , Que lindo es Michoacán , Así se quiere en Jalisco , La número cien and Cocula , partly in the interpretation of Jorge Negrete, became known .

Cortázar also wrote screenplays for more than 50 films in which actors such as Carmen Guerrero , Carlos López "Chaflán" , Pedro Armendáriz , Joaquín Pardavé , Mapy Cortés , Jorge Negrete, Meche Barba and - as a debutant in Hotel de verano (1943) - Germán Valdés (Tin Tan) performed. He composed more than thirty film scores for the films El tesoro de Pancho Villa (Arcady Boytler, 1935) and La familia Dressel ( Fernando de Fuentes , 1935) together with Juan Santiago Garrido .

1938 founded Cortázar with L Barcelata the film production company Producciones Barcelata-Cortázar, A. de P . In 1942 he made his debut as a director with the film Noche de ronda . He has directed a total of twenty films. On November 30, 1953, Cortázar was killed in a car accident on Lagos de Moreno. His son of the same name, Ernesto Cortázar Jr. , then thirteen years old, later also became known as a composer.
