Zekai Dede
Zekai Dede (* 1825 in Istanbul ; † 1897 ) was a Turkish composer. He is considered the last greatness of the classical style (1640–1897) of Turkish classical music .
Life
Zekai was born in the Eyup district of Istanbul . He learned calligraphy from his father . His musical talent brought Hammamizade İsmail Dede (also known as Dede Efendi; composer of Yine bir gülnihal ) to his attention. He then learned from Hammamizade İsmail Dede.
In 1845 he entered the service of Mustafa Fazıl Pascha and thus spent the next 13 years in Cairo , which was then part of the Ottoman Empire . In Cairo he composed several hymns ( İlahi ) to Arabic text. With the appointment of Mustafa Fazıl Pasha as vizier of the Ottoman state, Zekai Efendi returned with him to Istanbul in 1858.
In 1864 he joined the Mevlevi Order (from which his title Dede goes back). In 1884 he became Kudümzenba şı (head of the Kudümplayer) with the Bahariye Mevlevihane . In addition, Zekai Dede gave diction courses.
Zekai Dede's students include Rauf Yekta Bey, Subhi Ezgi and his son Ahmed İrsoy.
Works
Zekai Dede composed numerous religious hymns ( İlahis ), music based on the complex Kar and Beste forms (see Turkish Classical Music ) as well as lighter Şarkı . He composed five ayins for the Mevlevi ceremony.
