Otakar Berger
Otakar Berger ( Otto Wenzel Berger ; born January 4, 1873 in Moorgrund an der Aupa , † June 29, 1897 in Machau ) was a Czech cellist.
Berger was the son of the teacher Jan Berger and his wife Anna, née Řepková. After attending the German Benedictine monastery high school in Braunau , he studied cello at the Prague Conservatory with Hanuš Wihan and František Hegenbarth and composition with Antonín Dvořák . Other of his teachers were Josef Bohuslav Foerster and Karel Stecker . With his friends Josef Suk , Oskar Nedbal and Karel Hoffmann , he founded the Czech String Quartet in 1892 , which performed with great success in Prague and Vienna, among others. When he fell ill with tuberculosis in 1893, he looked in vain for a cure in Bad Reinerz ( Dušníky ) and the South Tyrolean Gries near Bozen . During this time, he was replaced by his teacher Wihan, who became a permanent member of the quartet after his death in 1897.
