Hugo de Groot (born September 8, 1897 in 's-Hertogenbosch , Netherlands ; † November 6, 1986 in Hilversum , Netherlands) was a Dutch composer , conductor and musician .

Live and act

At the music school of 's-Hertogenbosch he learned trumpet and violin as a child and played in the municipal orchestra from an early age. After he accompanied silent films as a violinist in cinemas and thus earned a little extra money, he studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague , Netherlands. At the age of 18 he already had the right to work as a violin teacher. At the age of 20 he was accepted as a violinist, after passing an appropriate examination, in the world-famous Concertgebouw Orchestra , Amsterdam . Here he worked for three years under the conductor Willem Mengelberg . In order to earn more money, he dared to become the conductor of a cinema orchestra in Amsterdam. When the talkies began, a cinema orchestra was no longer necessary.

Here, too, he was lucky that the Dutch broadcasting company VARA was looking for a conductor for a radio orchestra that was still to be established. From 1929 to 1940 he was the conductor of the VARA radio orchestra. He became known and was a guest conductor with symphony orchestras at home and abroad. The German occupying powers removed him from his position because he was not prepared to continue working under these conditions. After the war he became director of the music department of Wereldoemrop (comparable to Deutschlandfunk). He was also director of a music publisher and guest conductor of various symphony orchestras. He then moved to the broadcasting company AVRO and later to the umbrella organization of the Dutch broadcasting companies, the Nederlandse Radio Unie , as conductor of the Promenade Orchestra .

His oeuvre encompasses more than 1000 compositions in all possible genres.
