Rafael Ignacio

Rafael Ignacio (born June 15, 1897 in San Francisco de Macorís , † 1984 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican composer.

Ignacio played in a children's band in his hometown at the age of ten. There he learned to play the cornet and the double bass with Luis Betances and then entered the Orquesta Filarmónica Beethoven . He later played the tuba in a chapel in Santo Domingo under the direction of José de Jesús Ravelo and became director of the Banda del Ejército Nacional . In 1932 he was one of the founding members of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Santo Domingo (later Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional ).

He also directed the music academy in Azua de Compostela and founded a dance band there. In Santiago de los Caballeros he was director of the military band, with which he performed works such as Haydn's military symphony and Liszt's Les Preludes .

Ignacio's most important composition is the suite folklórica , which he arranged for a large symphony orchestra and in which he recorded motifs from Dominican folk music. His Fantasía sinfónica was also based on motifs from Dominican folklore. He also composed a large number of dances, including waltzes , polkas and merengues .
