José de Jesús Ravelo

José de Jesús Ravelo Castro (born March 21, 1876 in Santo Domingo ; † December 2, 1951 ibid) was a Dominican composer and music teacher.

Ravelo was a musical self-taught. He only had lessons from Juan Francisco Pereyra . From 1894 to 1900 he directed the Pacificador Chapel , after which he taught singing to Eugenio María de Hostos ' Escuela Normal . He was also a music professor at the Instituto Salomé Ureña and the Colegio Santo Tomás . In collaboration with the lyricist Ramón Emilio Jiménez , the composition La patria en la canción was created during this time .

In 1904 he founded the Octeto del Casino de la Juventud with a group of music lovers, from which the Orquesta de la Sociedad de Conciertos emerged in 1932 . Since it was founded in 1908, he has directed the Liceo Musical (from 1942 Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Declamación ). In 1928 Ravelo was president of the Primer Congreso Dominicano de Música . In 1931 he became the artistic director of the radio station HIX .

Ravelo composed a. a. Waltzes, romances for voice and piano, chamber music, orchestral works, masses, motets and oratorios. His best-known work is the oratorio La muerte de Cristo , which appeared in print in New York in 1941. In 1934 he published a Historia de los himnos dominicanos .
