San Francisco de Macorís is a city in the Dominican Republic . It is the capital of the Duarte province and has 188,118 inhabitants (2010 census). The name San Francisco de Macorís is derived from the amalgamation of the name of Saint Francis , the patron saint of the Franciscan Order (a religious organization from Italy that came to this area during colonization) and the old name of the area, Macorix.
history
The predecessor city, located near San Francisco de Macorís, was founded in 1497. After Vega Cotuí was founded in 1505 in a place rich in gold. Today's San Francisco de Macorí and the Duarte province were rural outskirts of La Vega and Cotuí, respectively , for centuries . Today's San Francisco de Macorís Congregation was formed in 1778 after several local families donated land to help found the city.
In 1795 the Treaty of Basel was signed, in which Spain ceded the entire western area of the Spanish island of Hispaniola to France. France took over the Spanish side in 1801 and under French leadership a new political division of the island and the city of San Francisco de Macorís was conceived, which was assigned to a parish . It is believed that the city council was set up at this point, as only parts of the protocols remain.
Today the city is the economic center of the Duarte Province.
Location and climate
The city of San Francisco de Macorís is located in the northern region of the Dominican Republic ( Cibao Region ) between the Septentrional Mountain Range in the north and the Cibao Valley in the south. San Francisco de Macorís has hills to the north that offer great views of the city in the evenings. The Jaya River flows past the west of the city.
Temperatures fluctuate between 17 and 32 degrees Celsius, with the cooler temperatures being influenced by precipitation. The annual average temperature is 25.6 degrees. Due to its location, the city is not affected by hurricanes or extremely hot weather. Occasional flooding can occur due to the rainy season, which is mostly noticeable in May.
economy
The city is the center of the Duarte Province, where the largest amount of organic cocoa is produced, making the Dominican Republic the largest producer and exporter of this product. There is also cattle breeding and rice cultivation in the area.
