• January 14 : The world premiere of the veristic opera Tosca by Giacomo Puccini takes place at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome under the direction of Leopoldo Mugnone . The libretto is by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica based on the drama of the same name by Victorien Sardou .
• January 17th : The musical tragedy Cain by Eugen d'Albert has its world premiere at the Royal Opera House in Berlin . The libretto, based on the book of Genesis in the Bible, is by Heinrich Bulthaupt .
• January 22nd : The world premiere of the fairytale opera Once Upon a Time ... by Alexander von Zemlinsky takes place at the Court Opera in Vienna .
• February 2 : The world premiere of the veristic opera Louise by Gustave Charpentier takes place in Paris.
• October 3 : Edward Elgar's oratorio The Dream of Gerontius premieres in Birmingham.
