Harry Macdonough

John Scantlebury Macdonough (born May 30, 1871 in Hamilton , Ontario , † September 26, 1931 in New York City ) was a Canadian singer (tenor).

Life

Macdonough began his musical career as a solo singer of church music. He later turned to popular romantic ballads and changed his name to Harry Macdonough. In 1898 he made his first recordings for the Michigan Electric Company in Detroit. In addition to his solo activities, from 1899 he was second tenor of the Edison Male Quartet (later Haydn Quartet ; with John H. Bieling , SH Dudley and William F. Hooley ).

He recorded with the Hayd (e) n Quartet for the Berlin Gramophone Company and Victor Records . As a singer for the Victor Company, he also worked with the Victor Mixed Chorus , the Light Opera , the Victor Opera Trio , Quartet and Sextet, as well as with the Lyric Trio and Quartet and the Orpheus Quartet . During his active time as a singer until 1920 he made hundreds of solo, duet and ensemble recordings, including titles such as Tell Me Pretty Maiden (with Grace Spencer ), Hiawatha and Annie Laurie (with the Haydn Quartet) and By the Light of the Silv'ry Moon (with the Haydn Quartet and Billy Murray ).

After the end of his singing career, he was a manager at the Victor Talking Machine Company until 1922 and was in charge of artists and repertoire until 1925. Until his death in 1931 he was director of the Columbia Records recording studios .
