The Nederlands Uitvaart Museum Tot Zover ( German  Dutch Funeral Museum) is a museum in Amsterdam that is about the history of dealing with death . It is located on the edge of the De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery .

history

The idea for a museum about funeral rites dates back to the 1960s. In 1990 the Dutch Funeral Museum Foundation was established. In 2000 an agreement was reached on the location for the museum. Construction and renovation work began in March 2005. The museum opened in December 2007.

collection

The collection includes many things related to the traditions and practices of burial and mourning ( sepulchral culture ) in the Netherlands: paintings, death masks , tombstones , coffins and urns , hearses , lotus powder , camphor and musk . The exhibition is divided into the areas of ritual, body, mourning and memory, and memento mori .
