The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is an internationally oriented institute at the Dutch Erasmus University Rotterdam that deals with the topics of urban management and development. The fields of activity of the institute, which was founded in 1958 as the “Bouwcentrum”, include postgraduate training, consulting and applied research in the areas of urban management, housing and urban planning.

The IHS was founded in 1958 as one of six Dutch universities with an international focus (as well as the International Institute of Social Studies , ISS, the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation or UNESCO-IHE, Institute for Water Education ). When it was founded, the IHS was called Bouwcentrum - later Bouwcentrum International Education (BIE) - and was housed in the distinctive "round building" in downtown Rotterdam ( 51 ° 55 ′ 18 ″ N, 4 ° 28 ′ 7 ″ E ). Jan van Ettinger Sr., the then director of the Rotterdam Institute, whose existence is owed to the necessary reconstruction of Rotterdam after the Second World War, initiated the first IHS course called " International Course on Building ", with the aim of helping urban planners, To impart systematic methods for achieving building standards to engineers and architects from developing countries from developing countries. In 1972 the range of training was expanded.

In 1982 the name of the institute was changed to " Institute for Housing Studies " (IHS). At the same time, the courses were given a new direction and concentrated on imparting knowledge for problem solving in local contexts. In 1990, in addition to another name change ( Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies , while retaining the acronym IHS), a cooperation with the Erasmus University Rotterdam regarding a master’s course on the subject of “ Urban Management ”.

In 2004 IHS was integrated as an independent institute in the association of the Erasmus University Rotterdam as a subsidiary institute of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Erasmus School of Economics . The IHS celebrated its 55th anniversary in the 2012/2013 academic year. The current director of the institute is Kees van Rooijen .
