Joseph Matthews Mannone (* 13. February 1900 in New Orleans , Louisiana ; † 9. July 1982 in Las Vegas , Nevada ), better known as Wingy Manone , was an American jazz - trumpet player - singer and - Bandleader Italian descent.

biography

Manone was born in New Orleans , Louisiana in 1900 . At the age of ten he lost his right arm in a tram accident, which is why he wore a prosthetic arm during his stage appearances.

After playing with various bands from his hometown, he began to travel randomly through the United States in the 1920s , working in Chicago and New York City, among others . In 1924 he made his first recording with the Arcadian Serenaders , formerly called "The Original Crescent City Jazzers", before creating his own recordings in 1927 with his band "Joe Manone's Harmony Kings". In 1928 he played in Chicago, then moved to New York , where he recorded a record in 1929 with "Benny Goodman's Boys". Soon he moved back to Chicago, where he took over the leadership of the band "Cellar Boys". In 1934, now back in New York, he landed his first hit in the charts with “Rhythm Is Our Business” (# 20), which was to be followed by seven more - one of the biggest was “Isle of Capri”. His last hit track in July 1938 was a version of the popular Slim Gaillard nonsense song "The Flat Foot Floogie". In 1940 Manone moved to Los Angeles , where he starred in the film Rhythm on the River . He performed in Las Vegas and decided to move in there. Manone played well into the 1970s. In 1982 he died in Las Vegas.
