Floyd O'Brien

Floyd O'Brien (born May 7, 1904 in Chicago , † November 26, 1968 there ) was an American trombonist of Chicago jazz .

He played from the early 1920s in Chicago as an unofficial member of the Austin High School gang and played in the bands of Earl Fuller , Floyd Town , Charles Pierce , Thelma Terry and Husk O'Hare , among others . In 1930/31 he played in a theater band in Des Moines and then went to New York City . There he played with Joe Venuti , Mal Hallett , Mike Durso and in the big bands of Phil Harris (1936-1939), Gene Krupa and His Orchestra (1939/40) and Bob Crosby (1940-1942). He recorded with Bud Freeman , Eddie Condon (from 1933), Mezz Mezzrow , George Wettling and Fats Waller . In 1943 he went to Los Angeles , where he was in Eddie Miller's short-lived big band , recorded with Bunk Johnson and played with Shorty Sherock , Jack Teagarden and Wingy Manone . He also played as a studio musician and recorded with Charles LaVere and his Chicago Loopers. In 1948 he moved back to Chicago. He played with Art Hodes (1955/56), Danny Alvin (1957/58), Albert Nicholas (1959) and Smokey Stover (1959). However, he mainly worked as a teacher and piano tuner.

He only recorded once in 1945 at Jump under his own name.
