Lucijan Marija Škerjanc

Lucijan Marija Škerjanc (born December 17, 1900 in Graz in Austria-Hungary , † February 27, 1973 in Ljubljana in Yugoslavia ) was a Yugoslav composer , pianist and conductor .

Life

Škerjanc was the son of Slovenian parents who returned to their homeland in 1902. He studied in Ljubljana, from 1920 to 1921 at the Prague Conservatory and from 1922 to 1924 at the Vienna Music Academy, composition with Joseph Marx and piano with Anton Trost. He completed his studies in composition at the Schola Cantorum Paris with Vincent d'Indy from 1924 to 1927 and in conducting at the Basel Conservatory with Felix Weingartner in 1930.

Škerjanc taught music in Ljubljana as early as 1922. In 1926 he was appointed to the conservatory as a composition teacher. In 1940 he moved to the Ljubljana Music Academy , where he stayed until 1970. Between 1945 and 1947 he also worked there as dean, but gave up this position in favor of his composing activities. In addition, he was conductor of the Glasbena Matica Orchestergesellschaft from 1925 to 1945, director of the Slovenian Philharmonic between 1950 and 1955 and a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1949. In 1964 he was awarded the Herder Prize in Basel, which was worth 10,000 Swiss francs was endowed. He received the Slovenian Prešeren Prize , the highest honor for Slovenian artists, many times, most recently in 1971. He was also honored with the Ordre des Palmes Académiques in Paris. In 2001 a postage stamp with his portrait appeared in Slovenia.

The first musical influences in his compositions were Joseph Marx and Vincent d'Indy, with Škerjanc achieving an independent Slavonic harmony. From the late 1950s onwards, he also incorporated twelve-tone techniques into his music, but without fundamentally changing his style.
