Amadeo Roldan
Amadeo Roldán y Gardes (born July 12, 1900 in Paris , † March 7, 1939 in Havana ) was a Cuban composer and violinist.
Roldán studied music theory and violin at the Madrid Conservatory until 1916 and took private composition lessons with Conrado del Campo . In 1919 he went to Havana , where he was a student of Pedro Sanjuán and music director. In 1932 he became conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de La Habana . In 1927 he founded the Havana String Quartet and in 1931 the Escuela national de musica . He also taught harmony and composition at the Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana , whose director he became in 1936, and he also organized the Conciertos de Música Nueva .
Roldán is considered one of the most important Cuban composers of the 1920s and 1930s and the most important exponent of Afrocubanismo , a musical genre that combined the rhythm and instrumentation of African and Cuban music with Western European musical tradition. His best-known work was the ballet La Rebambaramba based on a libretto by Alejo Carpentier , which was also performed with great success in Berlin, Budapest, Los Angeles, Mexico and Bogotá.
At the documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987 , recordings of him were presented as an official contribution to the exhibition as part of the "Archeology of Acoustic Art 1: Radiofonia Futurista".
