Pedro Sanjuán

Pedro Eugenio Sanjuán Norte (born November 15, 1886 in San Sebastián , † October 18, 1976 in Washington ) was a Spanish composer and conductor.

Sanjúan studied at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid with Bartolomé Pérez Casas and Joaquín Turina and continued his education at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. He became a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid and later head of a military band.

In 1923 he went to Cuba and became a founding member of the Orquesta Filarmónica de La Habana , which he directed until 1932, alongside César Pérez Sentenat and Antonio Mompó . Here he made a name for himself as a patron of the avant-garde and mentor of a generation of young Cuban musicians and performed works by contemporary composers such as Charles Ives , Carl Ruggles , Henry Cowell , George Gershwin , Maurice Ravel , Igor Stravinski and Manuel de Falla . Among many others, the violinist Amadeo Roldán , the pianist Margot Rojas Mendoza , the singer Eva Gauthier and the cellist Alberto Roldán performed under his direction .

In 1932 Sanjuán returned to Spain. From here he traveled to Germany, Hungary, Russia, Austria, Portugal, England and Switzerland to perform as a conductor. In 1934 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Música together with Salvador Bacarisse , Julián Bautista and Julio Gómez . The following year he became director of the International Congress for Contemporary Music. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he returned to Cuba. From 1941 he lived in the USA, where he conducted various orchestras and taught at Converse College in Spartanburg.
